Product Description

Engineered for utility professionals, the Fisher TW82 is a high-performance digital line tracer designed to locate and trace buried utility lines with conductive properties, including metallic pipes, cables, or plastic lines with tracer wire. Its standout feature is the ability to switch between Normal and Lateral tracing modes, giving users exceptional flexibility when tracking difficult-to-detect lateral lines.

With its single-frequency 82.175 kHz operation, the TW82 provides accurate detection whether using direct conductive tracing, inductive placement, or a coupling clamp. Real-time signal strength, left/right guidance, azimuth indication, and automatic depth measurements offer comprehensive data directly on-screen. The Lateral Mode isolates weaker perpendicular signals, especially useful when tracing service lines branching from a main utility.

Built for tough field conditions, the TW82 boasts a rugged IP65-rated enclosure and operates in temperatures from -4°F to 140°F. The ergonomic two-button receiver and intuitive display make it user-friendly, while long-lasting D-cell battery operation (up to 130 hours) ensures uninterrupted field use. Compact, portable, and dependable, it's a workhorse built for daily utility locating tasks.

Purpose: Locating and tracing buried utility lines (e.g., water, gas, electric, telecom)

Frequently Asked Questions

What tracing methods does the TW82 support, and how do I choose the most effective one?

The TW82 supports conductive, inductive, and coupling clamp methods. Use conductive tracing for maximum signal clarity when a direct connection is available. Inductive tracing is effective when access is limited, while the coupling clamp is ideal for live or inaccessible conductors, applying signal safely without direct contact.

What is Lateral Mode and when is it required?

Lateral Mode isolates low-current service lines that branch off a main line. It suppresses dominant signals from the main to detect weaker perpendicular signals—especially useful when locating residential service drops or poorly grounded laterals.

How does the TW82 measure depth, and what affects its accuracy?

Depth readings are automatic and based on the electromagnetic field's symmetry and strength. Accuracy improves with conductive methods and strong signal return. Irregular fields, poor grounding, or inductive traces may reduce reliability.

What is the optimal distance between the transmitter and receiver during inductive tracing?

Maintain a minimum of 25 feet (8 meters) between the transmitter and receiver to avoid signal overload or coupling distortion. This spacing helps isolate the utility’s electromagnetic field from background noise.

Can the TW82 differentiate between multiple closely spaced utilities?

Yes. Use Signal Current (mA) and azimuth guidance to distinguish adjacent lines. The utility directly connected to the transmitter will typically carry the highest current reading, allowing you to identify and isolate it.

How does the auto impedance matching function benefit conductive tracing?

Auto impedance matching adjusts output power to deliver full signal strength across a wide range of ground conditions—optimizing performance for both high-resistance dry soils and low-resistance shunted paths without manual tuning.

Does the TW82 compensate for interference from overhead power lines?

To a degree. If interference from overhead lines exceeds the utility signal, the receiver will display “000” for depth and current. You may still trace the line, but depth and current accuracy will be affected. Adjust trace methods or relocate the transmitter for better field isolation.

What battery life can be expected in the field for both units?

The transmitter offers up to 130 hours, and the receiver provides 80 to 130 hours, depending on volume and usage. Both use D-cell alkaline batteries for extended field operation without recharge cycles.

Can the TW82 be used in wet or extreme weather conditions?

Yes. It’s IP65-rated, meaning it withstands water jets and harsh weather. It operates reliably in temperatures from -4°F to 140°F (-20°C to +60°C), suitable for year-round field deployment.

How do I adjust the signal range sensitivity in Lateral Mode?

While in Lateral Mode, press and hold the LATERAL button to enter signal range programming. Cycle through range values (50–300) and select just above your highest observed SIGNAL number for clearer detection of service laterals.
