    Frequently Asked Questions

How can I detect small gold objects more effectively with the Sharp Shooter II?

Small gold objects often register in the same range as aluminum foil or pull tabs, making them challenging to isolate. To improve detection, use the All Metal Mode with sensitivity set high. Scan slowly and listen for weak but repeatable signals. If using Discrimination Mode, avoid eliminating foil and pull tabs, as small gold items can share similar conductivity.

Why does my detector give inconsistent target ID readings on the same object?

Inconsistent readings can be caused by target orientation, depth, or nearby mineralization. If an object is at an angle, partially buried, or near highly mineralized soil, its signal may shift. Try scanning from multiple angles, lowering sensitivity slightly, and using Pinpoint Mode for a more stable reading.

What is the best way to determine if a detected signal is a single object or multiple nearby targets?

If you get fluctuating signals, scan at different angles. If the detector registers multiple distinct tones as you move the coil, you may have multiple targets. Using Pinpoint Mode can help define separate objects. Try narrowing down the detection field by sweeping slowly and in an “X” pattern.

Can I adjust for different ground conditions without a manual ground balance feature?

The Sharp Shooter II uses automatic ground balancing, but you can still optimize detection in mineralized soil by reducing sensitivity slightly and sweeping the coil at a consistent height just above the ground. Retuning the detector periodically in All Metal Mode can also help compensate for changes in ground conditions.
Why does my detector lose sensitivity in colder temperatures?
Temperature changes affect the detector’s internal components and battery performance. Moving from a warm indoor environment to cold outdoor conditions can cause a temporary sensitivity loss. To minimize this, let the detector adjust to the outdoor temperature for a few minutes before use. If using All Metal Mode, press the Retune button after temperature shifts to stabilize performance.
How do I distinguish between gold rings and pull tabs using audio tones?
Gold rings and pull tabs often share similar conductivity, causing them to trigger medium tones. However, a gold ring may produce a double beep when scanned at slow speeds, whereas a pull tab generally produces a single beep. To differentiate, sweep slowly and listen for subtle variations in the tone.
