Product Description

The Fisher FX-3 is a motion-sensitive, differential induction magnetometer engineered for locating ferrous metal objects such as survey markers, well casings, and buried iron pipes. Built for professionals in utility and damage prevention, it stands out with a unique target “nulling” tone feature for pinpoint accuracy.

Designed for real-world utility work, the FX-3 detects only ferromagnetic metals, ignoring aluminum, brass, or copper. Its motion-only response ensures minimal interference, while the audio tone increases in pitch and volume as targets are approached—then briefly nulls over the object for precise location feedback. A single control knob adjusts power and sensitivity, supported by solid-state VCO circuitry for reliable signal output and accurate depth detection even in high-interference zones.

Built to endure rugged field conditions, the FX-3 features a lightweight 2.5 lb frame, waterproof probe shaft up to 36", and a durable carrying case. Operates on a single 9V battery for up to 40 hours, with optional headphones for improved sound clarity in noisy environments. Simple, efficient, and field-proven—the FX-3 is a dependable tool for professionals who need reliable ferrous metal detection.

Purpose: Locating ferromagnetic objects such as survey markers, well casings, valves, and buried iron utility lines (e.g., water, gas, electric).

Frequently Asked Questions

What detection principle does the FX-3 operate on?

The FX-3 is a differential induction magnetometer, meaning it detects disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field caused by ferromagnetic materials. It uses two sensors to identify changes in magnetic intensity.

What types of metals can the FX-3 detect?

The FX-3 exclusively detects ferromagnetic materials—primarily iron and steel. It does not respond to non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, brass, or copper.

Why does the FX-3 produce a null tone when directly over a target?

The null is caused by both sensors receiving an equal magnetic response, which cancels the signal. This “hiccup” effect helps precisely pinpoint the center of the object.

How deep can the FX-3 detect buried objects?

Detection depth varies with target size, orientation, and magnetization. Large vertical iron pipes or highly magnetized objects can be detected at significantly greater depths—often beyond the reach of traditional coil-type detectors.

Does the FX-3 require motion to detect a target?

Yes, the FX-3 is a motion-sensitive instrument. Either the probe or the target must be in motion to generate a signal. Holding the unit stationary over a target will not produce a tone.

Can the FX-3 be used near power lines or buried utilities?

Yes, but caution is advised. The FX-3 is not influenced by AC signals or conductive utilities unless they contain ferromagnetic materials. However, nearby metal structures may generate false readings at high sensitivity.

How does the FX-3 handle interference from surface-level or background metal objects?

Users should adjust the sensitivity, sweep speed, and probe orientation. The FX-3’s high sensitivity can be modulated to minimize false signals from cluttered environments.

What is the recommended method for pinpointing a target?

Use the “null zone” method: sweep slowly and listen for the peak audio response, followed by the brief loss of signal. Reduce sensitivity and narrow your sweep pattern until you localize the exact center.

How should the FX-3 be positioned for best results in high-sensitivity mode?

Hold the unit vertically with the probe tip close to the ground. Move it slowly from side to side to avoid false signals and maintain signal clarity over deep or small ferrous targets.

How does battery voltage impact performance?

A weak battery reduces audio intensity and overall sensitivity. Use an alkaline 9V battery for optimal life (35+ hours) and performance, especially in cold environments.
